The upcoming stsing e.V. conference “Before Ruins” aims to engage STS scholars and other academics as well as non-academics in current issues and concerns in and around the German Ruhr Valley. In the form of cases (including excursions or field visits), scholars are invited to engage with non-(STS) scholars to collaborate on, test and advance current STS concepts and methods for their ability to attend to matters of concerns of others. We encourage doing together, not just presenting and discussing, actively encountering all the hardship and difficulties that such doing entails.

Being held in the Ruhr Valley – the largest urban area of Germany and subject to environmental, political and social transformations – Before Ruins generates opportunities to discuss situated controversies and issues. Select carefully: With this call for cases, we invite you to

  1. (option 1) arrange your own case with collaborators in the Ruhr Valley, or
  2. (option 2) bring your own case to the conference for collective work with colleagues, or
  3. (option 3) as an stsing e.V. working group, you would like to come together and work on a specific case of your broader theme or issue.

(more details on formulating a case at https://stsing.org/before-ruins/call-for-cases)

In the conference program, we have reserved time to for fieldvisits, invite collaborators to the venue, or work together in groups on case material. With this format, we attempt to make STS work accountable to concrete matters of concern outside of our community, and situate this work in the setting of the exciting Ruhr Valley.

The organizers of Before Ruins will provide required digital infrastructure to share case materials before and after.
